What to Expect from a Baby Naming Ceremony

A Jewish baby naming ceremony is an event where a baby is given their Hebrew name. Often times, the name is selected because it has significance to the family– for instance, Ashkenazic Jews select that honors a deceased relative, while Sephardic Jews name their children after a living relative. Parents may use the ceremony to explain their choice of name and why it is significant to them.

Blessings are given for the baby’s well-being, as well as to acknowledge that the child has been entered into a brit (or a covenant) with God. The traditional wish that the child grow into life of loving relationships, performance of good deeds, and dedication to the Torah.
